Personal reflections on our
reading of
My Dying Breath
|
My Dying Breath captures the atmosphere of what it was like to be in that war in Vietnam. What it demanded of men; how they thought about their task at hand, and dealt with it no matter the often horrific conditions they found themselves in. How they felt, and never forgot about the ones they loved in The World back home. Reed's novel also takes into account the heroic way those in the States lived through that time. He gives no quarter to the anti-war creatures. It is often said about the War in Vietnam that "you had to be there to understand it". Ben Reed's novel is of universal importance, and he makes it so that you are there. This is an important achievement because we still need to be there for a little while longer. There's much from that war that is in some way still affecting our lives. My Dying Breath reminds the reader of the great things Americans are capable of when faced with the greatest challenges. This is both the world of yesterday in Vietnam, and the promise of an even greater future America because she is still peopled with characters such as Reed depicts in his novel. The battle never ends. Reed shows that there is no greater, more worthwhile battle than to live, fight and die (if called upon), for friends, family, and America.
